my lovers teeth are white geese flying above me

cast in bronze and also in plaster

7" x 9" x 5"

Artist's statement:

This piece was inspired by Judy Grahn’s poem A Woman Is Talking To Death. The poem starts:

  One
Testimony in trials that never got heard

my lovers teeth are white geese flying above me
my lovers muscles are rope ladders under my hands

My intention was not to make concrete illustrations of the images in Grahn’s words, but instead to illustrate where her words, as a point of departure, motivated the creation of something new and still familiar. The images that reside in words are not fixed. This piece is a reflection of one of those images, and where I happened to be one of the times that I reread Grahn’s poem. I meant this as a celebration of voice that is not always welcomed.
