I am interested in how image interacts with text and the context of form or function or part of a story. I have written and illustrated books that stay in the expected medium of paper and ink. I’d like to bring those stories the potential to sit down and make themselves comfortable at the dinner table. This doesn’t mean that someone must eat a meal off of one of my plates in order for it to fulfill my intention for it, however I’d like to make that interaction a possibility, or at least something to be considered.

I enjoy the meaning that can be created and discovered in unlikely juxtapositions. My choice in the combinations of what I write and the images that share that space is not haphazard. The relationship that exists between the content of both are very much intentional, however unexpected they may be. That these interactions between text and image take place in the medium of clay and what could function as a dinner set is also very much intentional. This medium enables the inclusion of additional associations and another history.

My plates (stories, illustrations…) can be read in a number of ways and leave themselves open to trigger multiple experiences. When read with a focus on their potential function (based on the form of a plate) they can be considered: a proposal for a new kind of dining experience; a commentary on food or (perhaps more importantly) the human interactions that take place while hovering over plates; simply a good read waiting for you once you’ve cleaned your plate (if you ever decided to fill it). While these works can interact with each other when set out together, each piece can also be read independently, and is a complete work in and of itself.
